About Subterranean Spaces

A luxury basement interior with a glass and timber staircase

From basements to protective underground construction

Basement construction was the foundation of Subterranean Spaces, but the business has always worked across the whole building spectrum, from structure and groundworks to finishes and fit-out. We have delivered projects throughout the UK, and our work in protective construction has taken us into NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) projects overseas.

To support that international work we created our overseas arm, Subterranean Spaces Global (SSG). SSG now collaborates with partner companies around the world.

Our story

The experience behind the company goes back many years, to when our founder, Charles, began his career in construction. The journey has had four stages:

  • Broad construction. We began in general construction, working across many types of building project.
  • Basements. We then focused solely on basements, building the structural, waterproofing and engineering expertise that underground work demands.
  • Protective underground construction. From basements we moved into the niche of protective underground spaces, starting as a pure structural construction company.
  • Luxury and technology. We then branched into luxury construction, and added a technological layer of protection. That began with CBRN/NBC systems and has grown into data centres, security and operations.

Today, technological protection, data centres, security and operations are the main focus of our group company, SSG, while Subterranean Spaces continues to design and build basements, underground bunkers and specialist spaces for private and commercial clients.

Notable projects

Much of the experience behind Subterranean Spaces comes from our founder's earlier work in and around Richmond, including:

  • A new Victorian-style house on Mount Ararat Road, Richmond. A new-build over five floors including a basement, designed to match the period of the Victorian houses along the road so that it sits naturally alongside them.
  • Gaucho restaurant on the River Thames, Richmond. A high-class restaurant on the riverside, where flood risk meant specialist foundation work.
  • Eel Pie Island rowing club. A major refurbishment of the club's building on the island.
  • Lissoy House, Richmond. A Grade II listed house dating back to Cromwellian times, which Charles refurbished. A new basement was created and the house was restored to its original glory.

Awards and recognition

Our founder, Charles, won the Richmond Society Award for the Mount Ararat Road house, and was also nominated for the Gaucho restaurant.
